Boxing for Women in the East Bay: Fitness, Confidence and Skill

By Jamal Valdez-Allen, Head Coach · · Updated

A lot of women tell me they've thought about boxing for years but didn't know where to start, or didn't want to walk into a gym full of strangers. Private lessons solve both problems. Here's what training with me actually looks like.

You don't need to be "in shape" first

Boxing gets you in shape — you don't need to arrive that way. We start where you are. Rounds are short, rest is built in, and the intensity goes up as your fitness does.

What you'll get out of it

  • Fitness that doesn't feel like a chore: cardio, strength, coordination and core work at the same time.
  • Real technique: not just hitting a bag to music, but stance, punches and defense done properly.
  • Confidence: learning a hard skill and getting visibly better at it changes how you carry yourself.
  • Stress relief: an hour of focused mitt work clears your head like nothing else.

What about self-defense?

Boxing teaches skills that matter in a self-defense situation: balance, keeping your hands up, staying calm under pressure and hitting with proper technique. But I'll be straight with you — a boxing lesson isn't a self-defense course. Awareness and getting away safely come first. What boxing gives you is confidence and a body that knows how to move.

Is sparring part of it?

Only if you want it. Most of my clients never spar. If you do want to eventually, we build toward it slowly and carefully, with partners and pace chosen for you.

Train with a friend

Small-group sessions (2–4 people, $160 per session total) are a great way to start with a friend, sister or coworker. You get shared intensity, individual feedback and a lower cost per person.

Where we train

Gym sessions run at Osorio Training Center, 22500 Foothill Blvd, Hayward, CA 94541. I also come to you for mobile sessions in your home, garage or building gym across Hayward, Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda and San Francisco.
